A lady discovered Elsie in her garden last Wednesday. We have no idea how she got there - she is in such a state, she can't have walked far. We rushed Elsie to the vet. Her whole body is covered in wounds. Some are fresh, but some are weeks old. Some of them are deep and go right to the bone. Elsie was in so much pain the vet had to sedate her to clip back the coat and clean the wounds. She is so scared, so confused and absolutely pitiful. She's only a little lurcher, no bigger than a whippet, and only twelve months old.
She's at our sanctuary now, on heavy pain relief and antibiotics. Her wounds need to be flushed out every day. My friend Marie who works at the sanctuary wrote about that last night:
She flinches at the slightest movement, scared of humans, cowers in a corner, shaking. Does she think we want to hurt her? and then we have to inject her which hurts a little, we have to do it, we have to clean those deep and very painful wounds which are all over her body and she needs to be sedated to have them washed. As the minutes pass, she starts to feel a little sleepy. We lift her carefully onto the table, it is now we see the full extent of her wounds, words cannot totally explain what we are looking at. Deep, puss filled holes all over her body, her skin is itchy, and there is hair loss and her feet are split & sore. It is a pitiful sight. We begin our work, one holds her head, the other washing the wounds, she flinches as the hibiscrub wash touches her wounds, her legs shake with terror. We quietly talk to her to reassure her that everything is all right. She jumps through the sedation as the wounds are so sensitive, we see ligaments and bone through the deep open sores. Her neck has lots of old wounds which have healed over and fresh wounds open beside the closed ones. Two pitiful eyes look at us as we work, her body shaking, horror written all over face as she waits for more and more pain ripping through her body. We are only half way there, we turn her over and start again, so many more wounds on this sweet little brindle girl. Finally we finish, the wounds a clean and hopefully a tiny bit better. Gently we carry her to her thick warm towel lined bed to let the sedation wear off. We cover her with a towel to keep her warm. She curls up, burying her nose under her legs. Leaving her to sleep it off, we make a strong cup of tea, no words are spoken.....we are too shocked.

We are all truly heartbroken at LAW and have no words.

Poor little baby! I feel sick, how could anyone do this to any living creature?
I know what a wonderful job you are all doing at Limerick! I've adopted one of your dogs, Bawney, I am sure this poor baby will (eventually) make a full recovery and will learn to trust people again!

I can only echo Wendy's comments. We are totally shellshocked here that anyone could do such a thing to such a young pup. Thank God she was found and is being helped.
