PODENCO RESCUE is part of SOS Animals UK and we rescue many dogs from Spain and re-home them over in the UK. Especially podenco's and all the other wonderful podenco - crosses we have!

Please see our website for current dogs we have for re-homing:

www.sos-animals.org.uk

We are committed to crucial neutering programmes abroard, and we also offer volunteer placements for vet students, vets and anyone else who would like to donate there time to help out. We also want to work with both vets in the UK and in Spain to understand, educate and prevent the disease that many dogs suffer from out there called leishmania. Providing dogs with adequate protection from the disease is paramount, aswell as educating people who are traveling with their dogs about the risks and prevention.

Recently we have been trying to cope with the ever growing large number of Brits moving back to the UK from Spain and either dumping there dog, or contacting us for assistance to re-home them. It is a very sad situation and please see Betty's story for an example of what is happening out their currently.

Of-course this does not make our job any easier when we also have to work with the large number of cruelty cases and abandoned podencos either born on the street or have been kicked out as they are no longer needed as a working dog anymore.

I am sure anyone who has owned a podenco before will agree they are a wonderful breed, full of character and extremely affectionate and loving, they really do make wonderful pets, even if they have had a hard start in life. We have so many just sitting on our kennels or foster homes over there or on the streets we just cannot get homes for them out there - they are so common and will most likely live out there life over there in the kennels. (facing the risk of disease, ill health, depression the list goes on) That is of-course if many of theses shelters can actually survive financially.

So we try and do our bit! We know that when the podencos arrive over here they really do blossom and they are so striking and beautiful that it really makes you wonder how they could be neglected, ignored and forgotten. So please consider giving one of theses lovely hounds their forever home.

We focus on taking the most desperate cases, dogs that have been in the kennels for many years, or dogs with special needs, and the ones that are not doing well in a kennel environment.

PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE AND BELOW FOR DOGS LOOKING FOR HOMES NOW EITHER IN THE UK OR STILL IN SPAIN DUE TO COME OVER SOON

We home throughout the UK as long as we can arrange a homecheck and subject to transport. Our dogs are all vaccinated, chipped, neutered unless vets advice dictates otherwise and a donation is required upon adoption.

Please read our mission statement below and see our SOS website below for some of our success stories...please bear with us while we add more info to our SOS website and the 'podenco rescue' site.

If you would like to help us or get involved in anyway whatsoever we will be very grateful, we urgently need foster homes, help with transport, fundraising, help with admin. We are a very small rescue, but have lots of ambition!

We have vans going out to Spain frequently and are always in need of the following: blankets, plastic beds, flea & wormers, collars & leads, food anything doggy or cat related.

PLEASE GET IN TOUCH IF YOU CAN HELP

"SOS UK is dedicated to relieving animal suffering throughout the world. Committed to supporting crucial neutering programmes, distributing vital medications and re-homing animals in desperate need, SOS UK changes one animal’s life at a time.

We mainly work abroad, predominantly in Spain where there is a growing trend for British ex-pats to abandon their dogs on their return to the UK. Our objectives include rehoming abandoned Spanish dogs in the UK, sending vital veterinary supplies and veterinary staff to various animal shelters accross Europe and supporting crucial neutering programmes. In the past year we have worked with our partners to neuter over 400 dogs and cats and brought over 50 dogs to the UK who have all been placed in loving permanent homes."

Balthazar is a stunning 18 month old podenco

He has sadly spent most of his life in a kennels in Spain where he was found an the streets as a puppy with his brothers, they are very people orientated dogs and he loves a fuss being made of him!

He is lively, loving and affectionate and with the right direction will make a super, loyal friend! He is great off lead and his recall is good. He is fine with other dogs and playful. However he would benefit from some training classes to learn the basics.

He would suit a dog experienced family, who can also give him the exercise he would love! He really does deserves his chance, he is in foster home now and everything is so new for him but he is adapting really well.

Please get in touch if you can offer this lovely boy the home he deserves.

Balthazar is neutered, vaccinated, and has a PET PASSPORT.

Balth enjoying his new foster family and is settling in well, he has been great with the cats, kids and plays beautifully with other dogs!

His recall is fantastic (which is a BIG bonus for any sighthound!) and he has been clean and non-destructive in the house, he really is a lovely, stunning boy. :flowers:

He will make a wonderful, loyal, affectionate friend for life, please get in touch if you would like to meet him, he is fostered in Surrey.

Thank-you!! He really is lovely! The foster family adore him...amazing how quickly they settle after spending years in a kennel, especially how they learn about a nice cosy sofa, always makes me smile! :flowers:

Yes he is!!! Infact so happy - looks like he is staying in the foster home forever!!! They love him so much and have decided to adopt him so they now have two beautiful podenco boys!

He has been such a great dog since he arrived, good with the cats, great off the led, great with the kids...there in love!! His brothers Lucas and Moses have also got glowing reports!! They are just such lovely boys! Just Noah left in Spain now :-(

Jiminy Cricket Incredibly Brave Podenco Andaluz :throb:

http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/yy275/sosanimals/Jimmy%20the%20podenco/264.jpg

This tiny little boy weighing only 9.5 kg, was brought over to the UK a fortnight ago, as it was felt that with his partial sight he would be highly unlikely to be homed in Spain. What an absolute star he has been!! The rescue kennels he had been at in Spain for the last 6 months didn't have an awful lot of time to socialise him, so naturally he was very shy. He didn't appear to have had much interaction with other dogs, very nervous with hands, legs, doors. With his limited daytime sight we thought it will take a long time to gain his trust and restore his confidence.

Wow how wrong can you be!! This little Podenco has the heart of a lion, the face and character of a clown and the stamina of a thoroughbred. He truly is quite astounding, when you consider that he has only been here a fortnight ,he is now telling me what time to go to bed!! "Come on, come on help me up the stairs." !

He needs a special home of his own where there are 1 or more dogs for him to relate to and they also must be gentle enough for him to be able to play(Eve is way too rough ) he's no wimp and loves a rough and tumble.

http://i799.photobucket.com/albums/yy275/sosanimals/Jimmy%20the%20podenco/DSCN0612.jpg

He's now totally house trained, cat friendly, has learned a few commands, and LIVES for his walks. His daytime sight is limited to shadows and shapes, but he appears to have good night vision, as he gallops round the garden at a hundred miles an hour, dodging all obstacles.

Jiminy is about 15-18months old semi roughcoat golden boy, all bloods have been done and were clear. He just needs that perfect sofa now and the story would be complete, from bumbling around the campo in Spain to his little slice of heaven.

Jimmy is great with cats and house trained. He is neutered, vaccinated and holds a full Pet passport, Can you offer this special little boy his forever home?
